Memorial Day Weekend Activities

Good morning, it’s once again that weekend when we’re able to give back to our charter organization, the American Legion Post 49, and honor our nation’s veterans.  They have requested assistance, as they do every year, to set up flags at the cemetery in Utica.  We’ll meet there at 6:00pm (or before!) today, Friday, May 25th.  An extra pair of pliers and some work gloves wouldn’t be bad to bring.  Setup generally takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on how many can come help.  Unfortunately Rob and I both have conflicts, so we won’t be there.  Scout shirts are unnecessary for setup.

The ceremony will be on Monday at 2:00pm.  The ceremony is a formal event.  Please wear class A uniform, slide and neckerchief, with either scout pants or jeans.  It looks like a hot day, but we can manage a little discomfort for an hour.  We generally meet over at the corner of HWY 34 & D street and march in together with the legion.  It seems like we may have stopped doing this in the last year or two, so I don’t know the exact plan.  Those of you going tonight – could you please ask and find out?

After the ceremony we will help to take down the flags and put them away.  You may want to toss in some shorts and a T-shirt for that.  You don’t need to stay in uniform for cleanup.

Scouts BSA

Yesterday the name of the Boy Scouts, referring to boys age 11-17, was changed to Scouts BSA.  The Cub Scouts will still be called Cub Scouts, and Venturing is still there as well.  The organization above Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA and Venturing is still called BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA.

Regarding girls joining Scouts BSA – this is how it works as of the date of this writing:

Our chartered organization (CO) is the American Legion Post 49.  It is up to them to decide whether or not to charter an all-girl troop.  The troop could be numbered the same as our all-boy troop – Troop 180, or the girl’s troop could request a new number.  A girl troop and a boy troop could share the same committee members and assistant scoutmasters, but would need its own Scoutmaster.   Just as with a boy’s troop, it would also need at minimum of five girls to create a new troop.  Girl’s troop meetings would need to be conducted separately from the boy’s troop meetings, however the troops are allowed to have joint activities if they opted to do so.  There is no such thing as a coed or mixed gender troop.  Our current boys troop won’t suddenly start having girls sprinkled into it.

While all these changes are initially sometimes hard to comprehend or accept, I think it’s important to remember that the program itself has not changed at all.  The requirements of Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts) and Venturing have thus far all remained the same.  Attaining the Eagle rank is just as prestigious as it has always been.  As the current Scoutmaster of Troop 180, I will continue to work with our boys, doing my best to develop them into young men of character – young men who are Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.  If a girls troop were to form, I see no reason why they can’t be developed into young women possessing the same traits.  It’s up to us as parents and leaders to continue to instill these values in our youth, regardless of their gender, and ultimately, regardless of scouting and what it’s called.

Lewis and Clark Merit Badges

Attached here is the list of merit badges, when they’re offered, and a list of prerequisites that need to be done for various merit badges prior to camp.  Please go through this and make your selections!  You can just write them down and we’ll get you signed up at our next meeting.  Lewis and Clark 2018

Keep in mind, first year scouts will be taking Trail to First Class.  They can select either the morning or afternoon session.

Summer Camp 2018

We have locked in our summer camp date and location for this year.  We will be attending Lewis & Clark Boy Scout Camp, June 24-30th.  No current leaders or scouts have been to this one, so it will be a new experience for all of us.  Thank you to Lynn Hoops for being willing to take a week off with the scouts!

The scouts should have let you know about this after our meeting last week.  We are requesting a $25 deposit be paid to confirm each scout’s participation.  Popcorn account funds will be used for the remainder of the camp fees.  If you could send that with your scouts to tonight’s meeting, it would be great.  Checks can be made out payable to BSA Troop 180.

Once your deposit has been received, we’ll get your scout signed up for his choice of merit badge courses and finalize the registration with the camp.  If your scout’s popcorn balance isn’t sufficient for the remainder of the fees, the difference will be due before Friday, April 13th.  Total cost of camp is $215 per scout, however, some merit badges have additional fees.
